TreatmentsMost dogs infected with heartworm could be effectively treated. The goal of treatment is to kill all of adult worms with an adulticide and all microfilariae with a microfilaricide. It is important to attempt to achieve this goal using a minimum of harmful effects from drugs along with a tolerable amount of complications created by the dying heartworms. Heartworm infected dogs showing no signs or mild signs have a higher success rate with treatment. Patients with signs of severe heartworm disease can be successfully treated, but the possibility of mortality and complications is greater. The existence of severe heartworm disease in a patient along with the existence of additional life-threatening diseases may prevent treatment for heartworm infection.Adult Heartworm Therapy (Adulticide Therapy)There is now one drug approved by the FDA for use in dogs for the removal of adult heartworms. This medication is a natural arsenical compound. Dogs getting this drug treatment will typically have had a thorough pretreatment evaluation of its condition and will subsequently be hospitalized during the administration of the medication.
